It was the first big prison built in San Juan and it was built by the Spaniards. It was built in 1837 and was left operating until 1976. The prisoners were forced to do harsh labor like building the walls of San Juan. It had to close down because of inhumane conditions and it was restored and is now the headquarters for the tourism company. Only three cells were left as they were. It is in the beautiful Paseo de la Princesa where you can buy crafts and more local cuisine.
